In the fall of 2005 we welcomed a group of children from a local preschool to come out and see our breeding flock of heirloom Standard Bronze turkeys. Clarice (Huesby) Swanson spent time with them explaining why these birds are so special.

She began the tour standing outside the turkey aviary. The children enjoyed "gobbling" at the turkeys and were excited when some of the toms answered back!

The idea behind the aviary (pictured above left) was to give a safe place for our breeding flock to roost during the winter, as well as to protect our yards and gardens from these foraging birds. But to the delight of the visiting children, these turkeys are escape artists!
Fortunately, there isn't
much in the garden for
the turkeys to steal in late fall and winter. |
