Joel's sister, Clarice Swanson, introduced everyone to our young heritage turkey chicks, or poults. We have successfully hatched 180 of our Unimproved Standard Bronze turkeys this spring. This heirloom breed, much like the Herefords we have selected, is best suited for the pasture finishing of our production model.

 

Inside the barn, newly hatched poults are warmed under the glow of heat lamps. After a couple of weeks their adult feathers grow in insulating them for life outside.

Nearby, the incubator and hatcher hold the last of the eggs to hatch for this season.

 

After one last good-bye from the group of Toms, the on farm walking tour drew to a close. Participants and hosts alike were appreciative of the day's opportunity to share ideas and learn from one another.
